Image
The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has challenged the membership of one of its leaders, Senator Ken Nnamani. Chairman of the APC in the state, Dr. Ben Nwoye, in a statement on Monday, said Nnamani should clarify a statement he made while commissioning a four-room building with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi recently. The party chairman demanded Nnamani to explain why he could not campaign openly for his party’s governorship candidate but was telling the PDP governorship candidate that “a good product markets itself” and promised that when the time comes he will say where his “people belong.” The statement continues, “This is very misleading. Could it be that Sen. Nnamani is so ashamed of his political party that he could not canvass openly for the party?” The party chairman said the APC in Enugu State had observed Sen. Nnamani’s double standard for far too long, adding that the party can no longer fold its arms and

Climate Change Takes Toll On French Oyster Farmers

Image
Gulping down oysters have long been a favourite New Year’s Eve ritual for the French, but as winters get warmer and summers get drier many growers to worry there will soon be fewer of the prized mollusks to go around. “Twenty years ago, we’d be shivering in the warehouse while preparing the holiday orders. Today it’s 15 degrees (60 Fahrenheit),” says Brittany oysterman Mathieu Le Moal, his sleeves rolled up in front of a tractor carrying dozens of bulging oyster sacks. “We don’t have seasons anymore — but oysters need all four,” Le Moal adds. “They need the winter, it’s when they can rest, use less energy.” Inside a wooden hanger redolent of salt and the sea, around a dozen of his workers are sorting, weighing and packing oysters into crates in the Brittany port of Cancale. Le Moal and other farmers along this stretch of France’s Emerald Coast say the long drought which struck swathes of the country this summer took a heavy toll, leading to smaller harvests and smaller shel

Image
US President Donald Trump / AFP PHOTO / Jim WATSON President Donald Trump appeared Monday to water down shock plans for an immediate pullout of US troops from Syria, even as he defiantly claimed his achievements in the conflict should make him a “national hero.” The tweeted comment came the day after a senior Republican senator said Trump had promised to stay in Syria to finish the job of destroying the Islamic State group — days after he shocked allies, and his own military establishment, by saying troops were coming home. “If anybody but Donald Trump did what I did in Syria, which was an ISIS loaded mess when I became President, they would be a national hero,” Trump tweeted, using another acronym for IS. “ISIS is mostly gone, we’re slowly sending our troops back home to be with their families, while at the same time fighting ISIS remnants,” he said. About 2,000 US forces and other foreign troops are in Syria to assist local fighters battling IS, the jihadists who on
