DSS dismisses officer for taking bribe

Abuja – The Department of State Services (DSS) has dismissed of one of its staff, Jaja Otelemaba, for taking bribe from motorists while on election duty in Ekiti. DSS Mr Peter Afunanya, Public Relations Officer of the Service, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, said the officer was seen on social media where he was negotiating with a motorist for financial patronage. “The fact is that when the news broke, the Service initiated a line of investigative actions. “These include the search and identification of the said officer; his withdrawal from the duty post and issuance of a memo as applicable to his cadre and rank,” he said. He said that Otelemaba was tried in an orderly room and summarily dismissed in line with the Service’s disciplinary procedures. President Buhari, Aisha vote at the Presidential and National Assembly Elections at  President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday morning reaffirmed his confidence in winning the presidential election. Mr Buhari told reporters shortly after voting at Kofar Baru, Sarkin Yara “A” ward in Daura, his home town, that he would win the election and congratulate himself. Clad in a light blue `Babbar Riga’, the president was accompanied by his wife, Aisha, and some security details. Enugu – The Police Command in Enugu State has debunked a social media rumour of a bomb explosion within Enugu metropolis on Friday. Enugu The rumour spread 12 hours to the commencement of the re-scheduled Presidential and National Assembly elections. ‘Card Readers Will Shut Down By 10pm On Election Day’ – INEC Reveals

Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, disclosed this at a press briefing on the progress made by the commission in Abuja. on Wednesday. The INEC chairman said the card readers were reconfigured to the new election date to make them impossible to be used illegally. “They are configured to specific polling units and only open for use at 8 am on the election day; they will automatically shut down by 10 pm in order to forestall any illegal use before the appointed time for elections,” he said. “Yesterday, I reported 95 percent completion of the configuration. I am pleased to report that we have now achieved 100 percent completion of the configuration. We are good to go on this call.” Yakubu added that the electoral body had made progress on logistics. Its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in his first progress report told the media in Abuja that the hitches that caused the poll shift have been cleared and that the fresh time-lines for the conduct of the election are now being met. Gaius Security operatives have apprehended a man identified as Gaius on Friday with INEC sensitive documents and result sheets that gave PDP victory ahead of Saturdays presidential and national assembly polls. INEC speaks on extension of PVC collection, late announcement of election shift

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says there is no more room for collection of the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in spite of the postponement of elections dates by one week. The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure while fielding questions at the commission’s meeting with stakeholders, on Saturday in Abuja. Yakubu said that the deadline for the collection of PVCs and elections campaign by political parties according to election timetable has passed. “All the other process that remain in the main timetable remain closed including the collection of PVC, except the conduct of the elections,” he said. On why the commission did not consult party leaders before adjusting the dates of the elections, Yakubu said that it was due to the urgency and that Section 36 of the Electoral Act empowered the commission to do so. “We have to take a decision and communicate because polls were suppose to open at 8a.m. and we took the decision at 2a.m,” h...

Army launches election monitoring and security situation room

Election Materials Destroyed As Fire Guts INEC Office In Plateau LG

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State has been gutted by fire. INEC Voter Education and Publicity Officer in the state, Osaretim Imaehorobo, confirmed this in a statement sent to  Channels Television  on Sunday. “A drunken security man was said to have caused the fire outbreak,” the statement read in part. During the incident which occurred on Saturday night, the office was completely burnt down with all its content comprising ballot boxes among others. Other items destroyed by the inferno are generators filled with fuel, cubicles, newly printed electronic and manual Voters Register. The fire also destroyed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) yet to be collected by residents and other materials yet to be identified. A Lagos High Court siting in Igbosere on Tuesday sentenced one Kamoru Kushimo to 10 years imprisonment for stabbing his friend to death during an argument over who would win the country’s 2015 general election, NAN reports. Kushimo was arraigned on Feb. 10, 2016 by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, charged with manslaughter. The convict pleaded not guilty, but was remanded in custody. Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya sentenced Kushimo after reviewing the facts and evidence of the case. Ogunsanya said the defendant was guilty of the offence of manslaughter and sentenced him accordingly. The Judge said that from the evidence before her, the prosecution, was able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. “The convict is hereby sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, and the sentence will take effect from the date of arraignment,’’  the Judge held.
