Job: Nigeria, Britain partner to combat unemployment

The Nigerian government has expressed its willingness to partner with the British Government in tackling unemployment and creating job opportunities for young persons in the country. PHOTO: NAN The Minister of State for  Labour  and Employment, Dr Festus Keyamo, stated this when the Political Counsellor, British High Commission, Mr Dominic Williams, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja. “We are ready to collaborate with our partners all over the world to open up avenues for job creation. We are open to all kinds of suggestions and levels of co-operation,” he said. He disclosed that the Government has opened up other sectors as part of efforts to diversify the economy from oil, which would, in turn, create room for employment. Former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, has said that the dividend of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), will be huge in the universities. Okebukola, who disclosed this while speaking with The Tribune, on the issues that would possibly shape the sector in 2019, said: “The dividend of the ASUU strike will be huge injection of more funds into our universities.” According to him, 2019 will turn out to be one of the best years in funding education in Nigeria in recent times. Okebukola also pointed out that because of improved funding, there will be marked improvements in schools and universities in physical resourcing and welfare of staff in the universities will also be enhanced.
