Job: Nigeria, Britain partner to combat unemployment

The Nigerian government has expressed its willingness to partner with the British Government in tackling unemployment and creating job opportunities for young persons in the country. Many suffered only the destruction of their homes and business, while some who lost their lives were not so lucky. As usual reports of these events which the press described as “Xenophobic attacks” have attracted the usual condemnation from Nigerian authorities. The House of Representatives through a press conference called by the Speaker, was particularly at the forefront of the demands for answers from the South African authorities. While the ruling party called for a nationalisation of South African-owned business interests, the Presidency announced that a special envoy had been appointed to meet with the South African authorities on the issue. Extreme poverty in Nigeria gives me sleepless nights – Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has said that the problem of extreme poverty in Nigeria keeps him up at night. The Vice President disclosed this at a dinner and Interactive Session with Faculty Members, Harvard Business School (HBS) in Lagos on Tuesday June 18th. “I think what keeps me up at night has to do with extreme poverty. The issue is that the largest number of those who vote for us are the very poor. The promises that government makes to them is that their lives will be better and obviously they are looking at their lives being better in the shortest possible time. I will like to see Nigeria being an industrialised nation in the next 10 years; a very strong middle class and most people living above poverty line.”  he said

Nigeria May Be Heading For Another Economic Recession - Chairman Nigerian Governors Forum

Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari,   who also doubles as the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, has warned that Nigeria may head for another economic recession due to the decline in oil price. Yari projected that the vital oil industry maybe hit by another weaker global prices, which has fallen from highs of about $112 a barrel in 2014 to below $75 at the moment. Yari, while speaking at the opening ceremony of an induction programme for newly-elected and returning governors in Abuja,  said  “this scenario is a wake-up call for all of you to come amply prepared to face these kinds of challenges.” “We are expecting the possibility of another cycle of recession by mid-2020 and which may last up to  third  quarter of 2021,”  he added. Nigeria’s GDP has grown 2.38 per cent in real terms within the fourth quarter of 2018, showing a 0.27 per cent jump over the fourth quarter of 2017. The Real GDP growth posted 5.31 per cent on a quarter-on-quarter basis, with an annual growth rate of 1.93 per cent printed for the fiscal year of 2018. While the aggregate nominal GDP was at NGN 35.230bn, a higher 12.65 per cent from NGN 31.275bn recorded in the fourth quarter of 2017. Nigeria’s nominal GDP for the fiscal year of 2018 was at NGN127.76bn, posting a nominal growth rate of 12.36 per cent above the fiscal year of 2017 level of NGN 113.71bn
