Job: Nigeria, Britain partner to combat unemployment

The Nigerian government has expressed its willingness to partner with the British Government in tackling unemployment and creating job opportunities for young persons in the country. ASUU: Lecturers resume strike

The Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero, KSUSTA, chapter, has concluded arrangement to resume its suspended strike. The union chapter said it would continue the strike until its pending issues were addressed by the State Government. This was contained in a press statement issued by its Chairman, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Wawata, shortly after the ASUU/KSUSTA meeting held at the institution’s premises. The statement said that following the suspension of the nationwide strike by the parent body, the KSUSTA branch has decided to continue its local strike, pending the outcome of its agreement with the state government. Wawata recalled that on April 1, last year, the memorandum of action was signed between the union and the government, but no action had been taken to implement the agreement, hence the decision to resume the suspended strike. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has warned the Federal Government against failing to disburse the N25bn agreed upon. It warned that should the Federal Government fail to disburse the N25bn agreed upon for revitalization of public universities, the “struggle continues”. National President of ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi issued the warning as contained in the body’s official Twitter handle on Monday. Ogunyemi was quoted by the handle as saying the funds will be closely monitored when released by the government. ASUU and FG in meeting The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has, Thursday, suspended the over three months-old strike it embarked upon since Sunday, 4th November, 2018. The union suspended the strike after a memorandum of Action, MoA, it reached with the Federal government towards the revitalisation of public universities. The ASUU National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi who announced the suspension, however, said that the union had embarked on the strike to “stem the continued slide into rot and decay in public universities since the 1980s.” He however decried the unpatriotic attitudes of some university chancellors whom he said tried to undermine the union’s struggle towards ensuring that universities in the country are revitalised. Atiku Abubakar The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has described as fake, a report that claimed it has endorsed the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar for president, Vanguard has reported. ASUU made its position known in a statement signed by the chairmen of the union’s branch in Ogun state university and those of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, and the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye. According to ASUU, the said report is a  “fabrication, completely nonexistent and a figment of (the) imagination of the newspaper reporter.” It explained that its body is national and as such, takes decision unilaterally and not what a report claims that its faction in a university took a decision. ASUU resumption: NANS wants INEC to further extend PVC collection

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Saturday appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to further extend the Feb. 11 deadline for collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC). INEC PVCs Mr Azeez Adeyemi, the National Public Relations Officer of the association, made the appeal in a statement made available to newsmen in Abeokuta. ASUU National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, announced this at a press conference in Abuja, the nation’s capital. Bukola Saraki The Senate President, Bukola Saraki has urged the Federal Government to resolve the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU). Saraki made the call on Wednesday in Abuja, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu. “The Federal Government must immediately work to address the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU), because this issue goes beyond negotiations.  It is affecting the education of Nigeria’s students, and disenfranchising many of them from participating in the upcoming general elections,” he stated. ASUU Branches Vote To Continue Strike

At least 80% of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have voted for the continuation of the ongoing nationwide strike. Gistvic Reports. It was gathered that over 200 members of the University of Ibadan, UI, chapter of the Union who attended the congress voted for the continuation of the strike while a little above 50 voted for its suspension with conditions. According to one of the ASUU members, the members who voted did not even consider the third option which states that the strike should be suspended with conditions. Speaking after the referendum, Dr. Deji Omole, Chairman of the University of Ibadan Chapter, said the referendum was conducted to know if the union should end the strike or not. He affirmed that members voted for the continuation of the strike because the government is yet to meet all of its demand. The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday conducted a referendum to decide whether to suspend its three-month strike or not. The national leaders of the union on Monday directed its zonal coordinators to meet and conduct the referendum. Over 200 members of the University of Ibadan chapter, who attended the congress allegedly voted for the continuation of the strike while a little above 50 voted for the suspension of the strike.
