– Several people have been reported killed while scores are injured following a train crash in Bavaria
– Authorities say two trains collided head on
Emerging reports suggest that nine people have been killed in the southern German state of Bavaria following an early morning train crash.
Rescue operations ongoing at the site of the crash in Germany
The Washington Post reports that two trains were involved in the crash near Bad Aibling in Bavaria.
It was not immediately clear how many people were injured, but a spokeswoman for police in Upper Bavaria confirmed to German news agency DPA that there were deaths.
DPA reported that one train derailed in the crash on Tuesday morning, and several wagons overturned.
It said eight rescue helicopters were standing on a lawn near the entrance to the town of Bad Aibling and further rescue staff were on the way to the scene of the crash.
Wreckage of the collision
Police spokesman Stefan Sonntag has confirmed that trains on a single track between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen collided just before 7am local time.
Mr Sonntag said the scene of the accident is so chaotic, there are no specific details of the number of dead or injured.
However, police at the scene have confirmed that the number of people “very seriously” injured has risen to 15, while the death toll has risen from an initial report of 4 to 9 people killed.
Bernd Rosenbach, managing director of Bayerische Oberlandbahn which operates Meridian trains, told reporters: “The accident is a huge shock for us. We are doing everything we can to help the travellers, relatives and workers.”
Technical manager Fabian Amini added:“Our thanks go to the emergency services and workers who gave their help so quickly.”
The BBC reports that although the trains were carrying commuters, local carnival holidays meant no schoolchildren were on board.
The scene of the crash is close to the Mangfall river in a hilly and densely wooded region. Casualties were being evacuated by boat and by helicopter.
Several hundred emergency services personnel were at the scene and rescue teams from nearby Austria were also helping, local media said.
By midday, police said all casualties had been removed from the wreckage; however, some reports suggests that two people are still missing.
The German transport minister, Alexander Dobrint, commended the rescue operations, and he also noted that it would be too early to speculate as to the cause of the crash.
Dobrint said the two passenger trains that crashed in Bavaria were on a curve and it appears that neither had time to brake before they hit head-on.
While noting that the stretch was fitted with a safety system designed to automatically stop trains to prevent such a crash, he said: “It’s not clear why it didn’t function, we have to assume that the train drivers had no visual contact and hit each other without braking.”
He added that there are three brain-boxes that need to be recovered to be certain of what went wrong.
The minister said that two of the brain-boxes in question had been recovered, while the search for the third remains ongoing.

Zack is a 39-year-old I freak who runs a very high-tech cybercafe. He also has this reputation of being a chronic womanizer – a fact he readily agrees to, blaming his sexual addiction on his father, he explains. “My father never married my mother because she was in school when she had me. When my grandmother who was looking after me died, my mother was still busy pursuing her academic career, so it was decided I should go and live with my father. I was already a lanky lad of 15 and my dad was still unmarried. I couldn’t cook and it was quite expensive buying already cooked food, so he looked around for a maid. The first one lasted a few months and was sent packing because she stole. Then a co-worker bought this beauty to be our housemaid. She was a 19-year-old and the understanding was that she would learn a trade. So she settled for fashion designing. “It was inevitable that my old man would start sleeping with Moira, the ma...
Lagos – A head of tomorrow’s rescheduled presidential and National Assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday said it would not conduct elections in volatile areas where security agencies said the safety of their officials could not be guaranteed, especially in some parts of the North East where Boko Haram insurgents had displaced thousands. It would be recalled that in 2015, the presidential election was shifted from February 14 to March 28, 2015 while the governorship and Assembly elections scheduled for February 28 were shifted to April 11 because of security issues. Also, the convoy of Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, was last week attacked by the Boko Haram splinter group loyal to the Islamic State, West Africa Province, in Gamboru area of the state while the governor was on election campaign. Speaking with Daily Independent on whether INEC would go ahead with the elections tomorrow despite the security situation in the...
