The management of the better by far institution made a total wrong call with the homongous increase in tuition fee that had just been released on students portal, this funny increment to every student is not a well thought out proposition as they never considered the stiff opposition it would meet from the part of the students, however, I expect that they believed they would have their way, just like they have always done.
The increment which amounts to over 120% increase from the previous charges is coming at a time when when most parents who strive to pay their wards fee are agitating for a minimum wage of N30,000, it brings the question, is the school trying to help the federal government fund the payment for the proposed minimum wage?
Going on, the faculty charges has also skyrocketed, then we ask, for what reason? We are treated as glorified secondary school students, we don't complain, we receive lectures in overcrowded classes, we don't complain, now the management think they can just force anything down our throats, we are sorry, this won't work.
With the former tuition fee, some students still find it hard to pay up on time and have to resort to seeking for help from friends and other bodies, yet the school feel they can just increase the tuition fee just because they want to.
Someone needs to remind the University management that for there to be an increment, there must be an increase in value, what value has increased in the school and what value do they intend to improve on? The management seem to forget that the calendar and the way academics is being run in the school has made many students autodidacts and the school deserve just a little praise for the students accomplishments.
We are at a time when the nation is in various economic crisis and all, yet the school management finds no better time to discomfort everyone further than this trying time, do they even consider the fact that some parents earn below N15000 in a month, yet they still strive to send their wards to school.
I expect that the school management might say they didn't force anyone to come to Unilorin, however, let them be reminded that most of them attended schools at a time when education was free/almost free and we are Nigerians too who deserve quality education too, after all that was why most people decided to go to federal institutions, since we believe and know that the fee wouldn't be in a competition with that of states and private institutions.
While I believe the Student Union Executives will be on their toes already to ensure something is done to this unjustifiable increment, I implore every student to put their registration on hold pending the time the issue would be resolved.
Let's all remember, Education is a human right with immense power to transform and on its cornerstone rests the foundation for democracy and freedom, do not deprive us of this right with increments in fees.
From a concerned Unilorite
