JAVIER SORIANO / AFP Karim Benzema stopped Real Madrid’s underwhelming La Liga season going from bad to worse on Sunday after firing a last-minute winner to hand the European champions a barely-deserved 3-2 winner over bottom club Huesca. Humbled by Ajax in the Champions League and dumped out of the Copa Del Rey by deadly rivals Barca, third-placed Real showed little signs of improvement in Zinedine Zidane’s second game in charge but Benzema, subject to rumours he may leave Madrid in the summer for Manchester United, struck with a fine curling finish the to snatch the three points at a sparsely populated Santiago Bernabeu. “We are happy with hi

NANS members protest at NASS Mr Adeyemi Azeez, NANS National Public Relations Officer (PRO) made the position of the students’ body known in a statment on Sunday in Abuja. How to have fun when time is not on your side!

There can be nothing more embarrassing than one of your husband’s friends, and a good family friend, at that witness your man’s weakness for the bottle.  Seki, a usually bubbly mother of two is a social friend I enjoy touching base with from time to time. She’s always struck me as a discontent woman in spite of her happy disposition. In one of our usual chin-wags, she let it slip that her husband was a chronic alcoholic. “Better than a wife-batterer”, I tried to console her. But she quickly reminded me that most violent men were at their worst when they’d had too much to drink. She’d confessed that Arthur, her husband had always loved a tipple in their courting days:  “And I was his good companion”, she continued.  “We were all young and carefree then. It is just that, as I and all our friends grew older and settled down, Arthur didn’t want to. love “On the two occasions I was pregnant, he’d happily left me alone at home so he could do the round of the clubs. That was when I

No regrets turning down Barca, Ighalo declares

Image
Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo said he wasn’t ready to be a part-time player in Barcelona hence he turned down a move to Nou Camp. It was widely reported that the Spanish LaLiga giants were keen to sign Ighalo to boost their striking options, but the deal did not see the light of the day as he remained in the Chinese Super League (CSL) with Shanghai Shenhua “My agent spoke to me about a loan interest from Barcelona. The club wanted a striker with La Liga experience and someone who understands Spanish football,” Ighalo told BBC Sport. “It was meant to be a six-month loan and strictly as a back-up striker. It was nice to hear that Barcelona were interested and any footballer would be more than happy to take it. “You need to weigh things up properly in life and ask yourself if it is your call to make or one to satisfy others “I respect my decision. I needed to focus on what is good for my career long-term and when you decide to do something – you stay true to yourself

The side chick, the kept woman and the other woman

By Chioma Gabriel It was at a wedding reception, a father was called to advise his daughter who was the bride at the wedding. It was a wedding graced by a bevy of beauties from the man’s office, the woman’s office, the church and friends. There were many single girls at the wedding. The father of the bride walked up the platform, looked his daughter, the chief bridesmaid, the bridesmaids, the beautiful friends of the bride and the posh ladies from the man’s office. Then he smiled and turned to his daughter. “You are always my baby and will always be although you grew up fast and slipped from my finger. But you are still my daughter and will remain so. Today, I handed you over to another man, your husband to continue to take care of you. I trust he will, having chosen you from the other women in his life to be his wife. “My daughter, I want to tell you the truth, amongst all the beautiful women gathered here are your husband’s former girlfriends, girlfriends and other fr

INEC under 1999 Constitution: Need to amend the electoral law for election of transformational leaders

Image
“ The solutions to many of the issues highlighted above and more lie in an urgent amendment to the Electoral Act. Happily there is already in place an Amendment Act which unfortunately failed to receive the assent of President Buhari ostensibly on the ground that it was passed and presented too close to the holding of the last elections”. THE 2019 elections have come and gone and winners and losers have emerged and have equally been informed of the decision of the electorate concerning their ambitions. Hopes and aspirations have been achieved and dashed. The electorate depending on their choice of candidate have welcomed and in some other instances condemned the outcome of the election. I, therefore, congratulate all the winners at the various levels of election, from the State to the Federal level. I also congratulate those who after losing the election have been quick to concede defeat and congratulate the winners of same. Such conduct signifies that some members of the Nig

I send hubby’s pal sexy texts!

Dear Bunmi, My husband and I have been together for 10 years, married for six years. We have two lovely sons of seven years and six months. Before I got pregnant with my second child, I’d started text-flirting with one of my husband’s friends. When I got pregnant, it stopped, but now I have started again. I love my husband very much, but we do have some issues. I wonder if this is the reason I have become attracted to his friend. This is not the first time I have had a relationship with someone else, but it has never been anything physical. It’s almost as though I just need someone to pay me attention. My husband has a lot of hobbies and rarely spends time alone with me. Could it be that which is causing me to become attracted to other men? I don’t want to cheat on him, but I feel like I’m behaving the way I do in case it satisfies whatever it is I’m looking for. Please help as I don’t know what to do. Fadeke, by e-mail. Dear Fadeke, You really need to talk to

Image
Everything you need to live well A Ugandan child rapper, Fresh Kid (Patrick Senyonjo), has been told to stop singing or risk his manager going to jail or even himself going to Juvenile prison, Daily Monitor reports. This new threat is coming on the heels of reports that he skips school and performs in clubs. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi Youth minister said this during an interview on Uganda’s NBS channel that his fans could face jail time if they are found supporting him because it is against the labour law to work at his age. “Children who are below 18 years are not allowed to perform and enter in clubs, so I am going to do everything possible to stop kids from performing and entering in clubs,” Florence Nakiwala said making reference to the seven-year-old. In a country where 80% of her population live in rural communities, gender parity has been achieved and about 86% of children between the ages of 6-11 attend primary schools. “I take this opportunity to

Buhari May Hand Over To Osinbajo

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari Vice President Yemi Osinbajo could be the next president, a leading Northern politician Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has said. Yakasai told The Interview in Kano yesterday that, “There may be an unwritten understanding that when President Muhammadu Buhari finishes, the Vice President will likely be the next presidential candidate of the APC.” Although Yakasai made a similar comment casually days before the February presidential election, he seemed almost certain now that the torch will pass to the South West, saying, “If it’s not Osinbajo, then somebody from there, probably (Bola Ahmed) Tinubu will likely emerge as the candidate of the APC.” He added: “I don’t see any possibility that the party will think of giving its candidacy to the South East, against the support it got from the South West. Apart from the votes, don’t forget that APC also enjoyed material support from the South West.” Although the convener of Save Nigeria and Pastor of t

In search of autonomy for government-owned universities

Image
In a shambles, Nigeria’s universities groan as they grapple with the federal and state governments’ stranglehold on their administration. If the authorities concerned will embrace university autonomy, writes Head Education Desk, IYABO LAWAL the public university system may flourish again. In an address on his first day as the leader of his country in 1939, Sir Robert Menzies, the former prime minister of Australia – who is credited to be the father of university education and reform in Australia, asked: “What are we to look for in a true university? What causes should it serve?” Though he provided clues, successive Nigerian governments still find the answer elusive as they continue to ignore the benefits of university autonomy. The best universities in the world, according to recent rankings, are very autonomous. Once upon a time, university education in Nigeria was not associated with the problems of autonomy and control but by the 1970s the calls for autonomy became strident
